Criminalization of Adultery
Context
According to recommendations made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, adultery ought to be made illegal again in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Additional News
❖ The Committee recommended that adultery be made a crime on a gender-neutral basis after reviewing the three new criminal law bills that will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.
❖ This suggestion is made nearly five years after the Supreme Court’s five-judge Constitution Bench unanimously decided to decriminalize adultery in 2018.
